In the Ether

University of Texas at Austin

(2020)

In the Ether engaged cyborg and queer theories to challenge core notions of perception and existence in an increasingly hybrid world. This desktop browser-based piece invited audiences to chart their own courses through its live and interactive phases, which encouraged imagining beyond our dominant reality toward the complexity of what we are capable of co-creating. Digital embodied exercises asked audiences to slow down, breathe, and sense into the intimate connection possible through our technology.
ARCOS and the University of Texas at Austin’s Department of Theatre and Dance developed the web-based experience In the Ether as part of the departmental production season, engaging a team of over 50 artists and designers, including graduate and undergraduate students from the university as well as ARCOS’ collaborating artists.

Online visitors, guided by a live streaming docent, moved through a series of phases, including an archive of documentation of the Ether series, a pre-filmed performance sequence with over a dozen interactive camera angles, culminating in live portals into dancers livestreaming from their own rooms.

Full credits appear in the University’s Digital Program. Read more about this production on the Department of Theatre and Dance’s blog.
